Heritage Action Responds to Boehner’s Criticism of Conservatives
A Washington, DC-based conservative group is responding to criticism from House Speaker John Boehner.
Speaker Boehner is defending a budget agreement that Heritage Action and others were highly critical of before it was made public. The Ohio Republican even went so far as to tell reporters yesterday that such conservatives “have lost all credibility.”
OneNewsNow sought out Dan Holler of Heritage Action for comment.
Holler
“If the Speaker wants to have an honest conversation with us – a fact-based conversation about the deal, when we came out and made comments about it, what’s in the deal – that’s something we’re happy to do,” he tells OneNewsNow.
“But the fact of the matter is that everybody in Washington knew exactly what was in the deal, in part because the leadership offices were leaking what was in the deal – and we feel as though we were in the exact right position.”
Meanwhile, Holler argues the deal is pretty much indefensible.
“It’s $63 billion in new spending over the next two years; it’s deficit increases over the rest of President Obama’s term; and more than 55 percent of the deficit reduction that everybody is talking about comes in 2022 and 2023,” he describes. “Most of these guys aren’t even going to be around then.”
That said, Holler says the agreement is “not a conservative deal” and is instead one of those typical Washington gimmicks of spend now, pay later. “The idea that conservatives would be attacked for opposing that is kind of outrageous,” he adds.
